Where to find services?

In listing the following contacts, we are in no way making any professional recommendations of the quality of services provided by the agencies/people at this moment. You should do your own research to verify what type of training/credentialing the service provider has. Your best bet is to look for someone with at least a masters-level degree in counseling/psychology and who is a registered licensed professional counselor (LPC) in Malaysia. A person who represents himself or herself to be a professional counselor in Malaysia but who is not licensed is in breach of the Malaysian Counselors’ Act 1998. You have a right to ask for their license number!

Any psychiatrist offering professional counseling/psychotherapy must be able to show intensive training in counseling/psychotherapy. They are often not registered members in any professional body of therapists/counselors because they have already been gazetted as psychiatrist.  While some psychiatrist may have adequate training in therapy, many have not received as much training in counseling/psychotherapy as psychologists/counselors.  If they are offering counseling/psychotherapy, ask them questions like what is their theoretical orientation, how many therapy courses did they take in their graduate school, how many hours in supervision in therapy did they receive, how much therapy they have provided to clients who are not being medicated by them, whether their supervision in therapy included observation/taped sessions, what type of problems have their provided therapy, what type of clients do they provide therapy to and etc. If you do not feel comfortable with their answers, look elsewhere to receive therapy!

Psychiatrist are trained to treat mental health illness by making clinical diagnosis and using psychotropic medication. In countries where mental health services are more developed, psychiatrist work together with psychologist/counselors by referring their clients to a psychologist for psychological assessments and a counselor/psychologist for therapy.

Psychological Assessments

As of to date, there is no credentialing board to determine the minimum qualifications of people representing themselves to be “psychologists” in Malaysia. This means that any Jane and John down the road can call himself or herself a psychologist in Malaysia. This is not the same in other parts of the world. In Texas, for example, only a person with a Ph.D in Psychology can bear the title of “psychologist”.

Before you seek any psychological services, please see this powerpoint presentation titled “Some ethical issues faced by Psychologists in Malaysia” here.
